The registration of motor vehicles and licensing of their drivers was introduced throughout the UK in 1903 by the Motor Car Act. In 1903 each registration authority was allocated index marks consisting of one or two letters, for Denbighshire the two letter index marks were CA and UN. The earliest registration marks consist of a two letter/four figure configuration (eg UN1-UN9999). By 1932, this was extended to three letter/three figure marks, which always combined the original CA and UN marks with a third letter (eg SCA1-SCA 999). After the Second World War, and car ownership continued to grow, local authorities were instructed to reverse the order of letters and numbers (eg. 1 UN-9999 UN) and by 1960s the practice of adding a suffix letter to six digit marks was introduced (eg AUN 1L-AUN 999L).
Denbighshire County Council became a registration and licensing authority in the Roads Act of 1920 acting as agents of the Minister of Transport, records beyond this point are considered to be public records.
The transfer of the administration of vehicle registration to the DVLC took place during 1970s and Denbighshire County Council, later succeeded by Clwyd County Council, were one of the few county councils in the country to retain the card index. - Termau:Road Transport
